They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and when I read women’s magazines, I behold beauty product ads on almost every other page. The creams, lotions and oils have various money-back guarantees - some are celebrity endorsed, some are supposedly newly revealed, European secrets and some are meant to be scientific breakthroughs. Although all of them are meant to get rid of fine lines, what women really want is a product that gets rid of unfine lines.
Women who don’t want to spend a small fortune on facial treatments can supposedly make their own. Massaging the face with 1 tablespoon of honey is meant to free it from common skin problems because honey is antibacterial. If honey isn’t available, 1 tablespoon of yogurt can be used instead. Yogurt contains lactic acid, which can dissolve dead skin cells. Then there’s a mixture of 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup water that can be used instead of expensive night creams. The olive oil moisturizes and revitalizes the skin, while the vinegar takes care of bacteria, dead skin and skin discoloration. If nothing else, these treatments will make women look good enough to eat.
Unfortunately, only 2% of the world’s women think they look beautiful; and 8% of U.S. women think media and advertising have set unrealistic standards of beauty. This is what motivated the Dove Company to launch its 2004 “Real Beauty” campaign. The campaign is meant to be a starting point for a wider definition of beauty. It’s meant to help free the next generation of women from self-limiting, beauty stereotypes and to build both self-esteem and healthy body images. In the U.S. Real Beauty is in partnership with the Girl Scouts, working with girls ages 8 to 17. Since the start of the campaign Dove has conducted approximately 2,700 self-esteem workshops around the world. Soon the words “Beauty Bar” on Dove soap could be changed to “Self-esteem Bar”.
For 30 male barn swallows beauty was in the color of their feathers. Evolutionary biologists at Arizona State University used a $5.99 marker to darken the swallows’ rust-colored feathers. One week later the birds’ testosterone levels had increased 36%. The biologists attributed the change in the swallows’ libido to the increased attention their darkened feathers were getting from female barn sparrows. This could mean that thinking clothes make the man is a bird-brain idea.

Reasons for taking time off work vary. Be it a family emergency, a medical condition, a misunderstanding with a co-worker, a hangover or a much needed break from stress employees everywhere and anywhere from the supervisors down to the rank and file will always have reasons to absent themselves. Unfortunately for most companies, employees take time off from work usually for reasons that are just unacceptable in a professional environment. Most of the time the more credible excuses are medical and should come with a doctor note.
The more common and credible excuses used by employees would include the common cold or the flu. Because it is infectious in nature, employees with colds or flu are usually allowed to stay at home in order to keep co-workers from catching the virus. Those with colds and flu are usually advised a day or two of bedrest as well as medication and plenty of fluids.
Physical injuries such as sprains and muscle strains are also common medical excuses especially if it effectively prevents the employee from performing the current job. A doctor note for injuries may require some amount of home stay and rest as well as special instructions on certain tasks that employees may or may not perform. A doctor note may contain for example certain limitations in terms of the number of hours an employee can stand or as to how heavy a weight the employee can carry. These instructions would of course depend on how severe the injury is. Other related excuses would be severe back pains and other muscular pains and injuries.
Another common medical excuse that an absent employee may present in a doctor note would be intestinal or abdominal pain or discomfort, usually caused by food poisoning and diarrhea. Dehydration resulting from such illnesses can make the employee severely weak. Moreover, the discomfort can also be distracting at work and may compel you to use toilet facilities every so often. For these type of illness a doctor note may recommend another day or two rest.
Skin allergies and infectious skin diseases are also common medical excuses for absences from work. Carbuncles and boils which aside from being painful, can also infect a co-worker are valid excuses that may be placed in a doctor note. Carbuncles take a while but it will not be until its last stages that the pain will become unbearable. This entails minor surgery but will not get you off work for more than a day.
Other acceptable medical excuses are however more difficult to make up because of its severity and extent. Of course if your illness genuinely requires hospitalization then you are more than excused from work
But whatever the reason and whatever the excuse, what’s more important is that you have a good doctor note to back you up. Most of the time unless employees present their doctor note, their absences incur consequences ranging from salary deductions to termination. If you’re faking it a credible doctor note can be found and purchased online, complete with a hospital and clinic logo as well as physician details, contact information and signature.
Dr E.Z. Streat runs a credible doctor note website. Visit his site to learn more about doctors notes.

More and more professionals are moving to small towns. The good news is they’re not having to move back in with their parents. These professionals are responding to Web-based recruitment campaigns from rural areas - campaigns that offer both good jobs and a better quality of life. In rural southwest Virginia the program’s called “Return to Roots” and lists jobs in technology, engineering, education and health care - jobs provided by companies moving to rural areas to save money. Similar programs have been started in other states. In fact, more than 500 job seekers have moved to South Dakota since it started its program in October 2006. Obviously, “Build it and they will come” applies to fields other than the “Field of Dreams”.
Text messaging may subvert letters and numbers to produce ultra-concise words and thoughts, but there’s good news. It’s not ruining the English language. In a 2007 British experiment children who texted scored higher in reading and vocabulary tests. The better they were at text abbreviating, the better they were in spelling and writing. It seems the more exposure children have to any kind of language, the more verbally skilled they become; and the children who had cell phones longest scored highest. That’s a message all phoneless children want their parents to get.
Ford’s good news is it’s introducing a blind spot mirror on its 2009 Ford Edge. This small mirror in the outer corner of the side mirror will give drivers a view of the area alongside their vehicle. Unlike aftermarket add-ons, these mirrors will be specifically designed for each car and truck model, thus providing an optimized field of view. Although a spokesman wouldn’t say how much the feature will cost Ford, it’s definitely af-ford-able.
LS9, a biotech company in San Francisco, has developed a good news fuel. It has the same properties as fossil fuel, but without the 100-million-year production wait. The fuel is a genetically-altered, harmless form of E coli bacteria that eats sugar and excretes the equivalent of diesel fuel. Unlike ethanol, which is made from corn, LS9’s fuel can be made from plants with no food value. Unlike ethanol, it won’t corrode oil pipelines or require cars to have special adjustments to use it. LS9 may not end oil dependency; but because it can program the bacteria to also produce gasoline and jet fuel, LS9 may be the Rumplestiltskin of the 21st century.

If you’re planning on hiring a comedian for your next corporate event or party there are a lot of things that you need to consider to ensure that the show will be a success. You can’t just blindly thumb through the phone book and pick the first comedian that you see advertised, you have to do a good deal of research to ensure that the comedian that you hire will put on a show that will be funny to your particular audience. A poor performance by the entertainment of the event can make the entire event a flop, but choosing someone who tries to entertain the audience with humor that may offend some of your employees could result in a much worse scenario than just a bad party - that’s why you need to make sure that the comedian you hire puts on the kind of show that your employees will respond to.
Here are some of the many things to consider before hiring a comedian, or any form of entertainment, for your next corporate event:
Who is in the Audience?
Your co-workers and employees are the reason that you are throwing your corporate event, without them you wouldn’t be having anything to celebrate - you most likely wouldn’t have a business at all, so it’s crucial that you examine your audience as a whole and make sure that nothing in the hired artist’s performance will offend anyone sitting in the audience.
Some basics to stay away from are: profanity, religion, race and sex. All of these can be very touchy topics that shouldn’t be brought up in the workplace, so they shouldn’t be brought up in an event help for the people in the workplace either. You can’t, and shouldn’t, know everything about all of your employees private lives - any one of these topics focused on in any manner could create a really uncomfortable situation for one or several of your valued employees. It’s safe to assume that if a topic shouldn’t be addressed at the workplace, than it shouldn’t be addressed by the entertainment at a corporate event either.
The Track Record of the Performer
Just as you don’t want to hire a comedian that will touch on subjects that could offend some of your employees, you also don’t want to hire a comedian with no experience in this type of atmosphere. Working the stage at a corporate event and working the stage at an open microphone night at a seedy bar are two completely different things - that’s not to say that a comedian who performs at clubs and bars can’t successfully perform at a corporate event, but you want someone with proof of success in these types of events.
The comedian you are considering should be able to provide any number of references of parties and events that they have performed at. It won’t take you more than a few minutes to check some of those corporate references to see exactly how the comedian that you are considering performed. A good reference from another or several other, corporate events will give you a good idea whether the comedian you are considering can perform well in the event that you are holding.
You want your corporate event to be a smashing success, something that all of your employees truly enjoy and will talk about favorably for the foreseeable future. You want everyone to laugh and have a good time without any chance of anyone feeling uncomfortable or being offended. The way to ensure this is to do your research and hire a comedian who is funny and clean and who has a good track record with several other corporate event performances under his or her belt.
Canadian Corporate Comedy Entertainment is an agency that provides standup comedians to Keynote speaker and corporate entertainment events, news headlines and general content relating to British entertainment and culture. If you hire a comedian in Toronto this agency provides.

The Amazon is being deforested three times faster in 2008 than in 2007. Brazil’s Environmental Minister attributes this to Amazon-region mayors ignoring illegal logging to get votes. Greenpeace attributes this to soy farmers and cattle ranchers clearing more land to profit from the rise in food prices. Although satellite imagery showed that 292 square miles were destroyed in August 2008 - compared to 89 square miles in August 2007 - that’s not the whole picture. Twenty-six percent of the Amazon can’t by seen by satellite because it’s covered by clouds - clouds that don’t have silver linings.
According to a study done by the International Union for Conservancy of Nature, 1 in 2 mammal species is in decline and 1 in 4 is at risk of extinction. This is because of what man has done to ecosystems worldwide. The IUCN’s 2008 Red List of Threatened Species shows 450 mammal species are endangered, 188 are critically endangered and 27 are possibly extinct. The study’s authors want governments and conservation groups to use Red List data to identify species and areas for conservation. They want conservation to make us see red.
Ozone should make us see red. Ozone is an atmospheric layer formed at an altitude of approximately 15.5 miles. By filtering sunlight, it protects Earth from harmful ultraviolet rays. In 2008 the hole in the ozone over Antarctica was 10.4 million square miles. That’s bigger than in 2007, but smaller than in 2006. The size changes because of weather conditions. When gases like chlorine and bromine are present at high altitudes, they destroy ozone. Although these gases came from man-made products phased out 2 decades ago, the damage they still do hasn’t been phased out.
Something that’s being phased in is a new recycling program in Los Angeles. Two-gallon, kitchen pails are being distributed to houses in an experimental, garbage, pick-up program. Participants are asked to separate household scraps - things like bones, eggshells, meats and vegetables - from regular garbage and to put them into the pails. The pails are to be emptied by the participants into recycling bins for lawn clippings, which are collected by the city. LA hopes this will divert 600 tons of wasted food that goes into landfills every day. This pilot program adds 5,000 LA households to those in cities like San Francisco and Seattle that have been recycling food scraps into compost for years. Green waste shouldn’t be wasted.
